League Updates
S1: ready to go, keeper rounds all set up (you don't need to worry about any exclusions, having your guys ranked 1-4, any of that), draft is happening next Sunday, March 1st at 4 PM Eastern Time, 1 PM Pacific. We're going with a last place-picks-first non-snaking draft, draft order listed elsewhere in this group. S2: all filled up with an S2-record 14 teams! I'll be setting that one to "ready" at Midnight Eastern tonight (2/19/08), so we should be autopicking either Friday or Saturday. If you've got pre-ranking to do, do it now. Man, this was easy this year. | | Tuesday, February 17th, 2009 | 5:20 pm [scottcrawford]

S1: Keepers (almost) Totally Set Up And Draft Order Set!
We're all regged now in S1, and aside from ozzdotnet's last 2 keeper picks (I think it's safe to say that he'll be keeping Cabrera and Teixeira) and a slight possibility here and there of some changes before the lockdown on Sunday, the first 4 rounds are taken care of! You can go to "Draft Results" under "Draft Central" in Yahoo, and review what we've got if you like. From my conversations with people inside and outside of the league, I've decided to set us up with a last place picks first, non-snaking draft. It's really the fairest way to do draft order consistently, if we can't have random draft order with the keeper stuff. If I catch any of you torpedoing your squads to get draft picks, though, there will be death. :D For those wondering, the draft order will be: 1: Baseball Champloo 2: ARod's Intern 3. El Chupacelebridad 4. REO Speed Dragons 5. no u 6. Pre-Poop Store 7. The HHR Network 8. RAPEBEAR ULTRA! 9. iHeart ARod.. 10. Grumpy Grizzlies 11. Yankees Pharmacist 12. Headless Paunch 13. Ghosts Of Shavedbush 14. TranslucentCreatures 15. HoJo's Heroes What a relief! Next stop: getting our 14th owner nailed down for S2 (waiting on word from a guy that did football this year), so we can autopick there. | | Monday, February 16th, 2009 | 2:24 pm [scottcrawford]

Good news and bad news re: keepers
The good news: I figured out how to set the keeper rounds so y'all don't have to do any weird pre-ranking shit. It was kinda hidden in Yahoo's stuff, but it's there. The bad news: to do that, we have to forego a Yahoo-set random draft order, which means we either have to pick random draft positions before the draft somehow, or go with some sort of pre-determined order (last place picks first, first place picks first, etc.). There's also an option to go with non-snaking draft order, which would eliminate the "two picks at the end of a round" condition that'd make "first place picks last" a potentially huge advantage. I love snake drafts, but we *might* have outgrown them finally. Thoughts, anyone? | 10:33 am [scottcrawford]

Official S1 Keepers Thread
All keepers need to be in to me (either by posting here or by emailing reverendscottcrawford@gmail.com) by Sunday, 2/22/08 at 4 PM Eastern Time, 3 Pacific time). You get to keep 4, which I STRONGLY recommend you rank 1-4 in your pre-draft rankings. Excluding everyone else's keepers isn't as much a necessity then, but it's helpful. Do not end up like ozzdotnet, who had to carry Curt Schilling all year in '08 as punishment for fucking up the keeper rounds. :D Final '08 S1 roster info is available here or on Yahoo. As of right now... We're looking at the following S1 changes for 2009:WHIP: gone! Total Bases (Hitting), Quality Starts, and Batters Grounding Into Double Play (Pitching) as new categories. Technically, No-Hitters and GIDP are tied for the new category spot right now, but I don't want to bring in No-Hitters without Hitting For The Cycle. I'd love to make things 7 x 7 this year, but the consensus right now is that 6 x 6 is what we want, so we'll wait until next year for Cycles and No-Nos. *sob* 2 DL slots instead of 1! My obtuse trade rules are gone; just don't make uneven deals that make the trades get voided out, and we're cool! You get to hang onto 4 keepers from your '08 roster, but you'll be able to keep 5 from your '09 roster! There's still time to vote if you haven't yet. I'm not locking in final categories until Yahoo reg opens. More than likely, though, based upon discussions I've had and current interest in the poll, this is what we're looking at for S1. Sanchez Update
For those who've been worrying, we've got plenty of time on keepers. They're not due in until a week before the draft (as is our tradition), and Yahoo hasn't even opened registration yet (figure late January/early February...they switch it up some from year to year), so don't sweat it. Here's what we know so far about each league: This year in S1: WHIP is almost definitely gone, it's the last year of 4 keepers (it goes to 5 keepers over '09-'10 and will probably stay there, as I'd never want to do less again, and more would be overkill), and we're adding a DL slot, bringing it up to 2 total (in my earlier comment to kandelschwartz, I made an error and said we'd be adding 2 DL slots; that'd be nuts). Oh, and aside from the "don't mess up trades by having too many guys on your team to complete them or I'll kill you" rule, I'm inclined to ditch the trade rules. Too confusing, and really, we haven't had an issue with trades since we cleared out a few problem owners a couple years back. Adding multiple stat categories (as would be my preference) seems to scare people, so I think we're gonna phase this stuff in a little each year. Given early feedback thus far, I'd be inclined to add 1 category on either side per year, but keeping it at a managable number (probably no more than 8x8 at any point). My preferred pairs are either Total Bases/Quality Starts or Hitting For The Cycle/No-Hitters, but we'll get to all that in a bit. This year in S2: HR-only H2H is near-definite. Having played a HR-only league last year (that mark00z was also in; he found a public doing it), I can tell you guys that it's a lot of fun, even if the format they went with (20 team roto with WAY too many roster spots) was flawed. I'd be inclined to do 16 roster spots (starting 8, 2 Util, 6 bench) and 2 DL slots there. Number of teams will depend on interest. It's low-impact and fun, which was actually our original intent with S2 before it got away from us, if you recall. This year in SFL: we've got like 7-8 months to figure out football. One thing at a time! Now, let's see if we can hash out what else we're doing to S1, category-wise...

Pondering some major changes...
I'm gonna think out loud here for a bit, so bear with me. As we all know, we get 4 fantasy teams per sport per Yahoo account. Adding the HR-only league would mean that Sanchez is taking up 3 of those team slots if you're in all of 'em. A few people, including Bob, who wouldn't even be able to add S1 if he stayed in S2, much less the HR-only league, are having trouble with even 2 Sanchez leagues this year. I'm thinking that this kinda sucks. Not that it sucks that people can't participate, because we all have lives (allegedly) and stuff we need to do, just that this thing which we're supposed to be doing for fun might be too much of a time-eater for some of the folks who enjoy it, as it's currently structured. I'm also really, really tired of the standard H2H format. Last year, I was in 4 H2H leagues, and I don't even like them that much. I'm a roto guy, plain and simple. This doesn't mean I wanna punish people who like H2H better, but for better or worse, I am running the leagues right now. We were talking about some interesting category changes in S2, though, and we've been having fun fine-tuning those categories over the years we've been doing S2, so I wouldn't necessarily want to lose that work outright. So, I'm going to run an idea past y'all. Sanchez League Baseball: still roto, but with an 8 x 8 format, similar in categories to what we've been doing in S2: Position Players: Runs, Home Runs, RBI, Stolen Bases, Total Bases, Errors, Batting Average, Cycles Pitchers: Wins, Losses, Strikeouts, Saves, Grounding Into Double Plays, Quality Starts, ERA and No-Hitters (with WHIP finally dying the death it should've years ago). The only categories I'm proposing that we haven't playtested in S2 yet are Errors and Losses, and I'm not married to them. We lose them, and it's 7 x 7 with WHIP still subtracted from the pitching side. We keep them, and it's 8 x 8. As we found out in S2 last year, no-hitters and cycles are a total crapshoot, but a fun one (unless you're Bob, as he had the only 2 Cycles, both on his bench.), so it's almost more like 7 x 7 or 6 x 6. Sanchez II: Head-To-Head Home Run-Only League, to give us a rest and loosen things up a bit around here. No decisions have been made, and this was actually just as controversial when I tossed it out there last year (at least the "adding categories to S1" part), so I expect some spirited discussion, but I think spirited discussion could be a good thing. Some Winter Sanchez Notes
First off, though he probably won't read this and I've congratulated him on the league board and in person, congrats to Bob Scheetz, a.k.a. sarah barracuda, for winning our inaugural season of the Sanchez Football League. Man, was that fun. H2H games are so much more fun when you're playing football. If you want in on '09, which is a long ways away, mind you, let me know here or otherwise. ( Second, here are the final rosters for '08 Sanchez League Baseball: )Pick out your 4 keepers (next season, we add 5, so draft carefully) from there. The rosters are also available on your Yahoo fantasy profiles. Third, if anyone's out for this year's S1 or S2 leagues, please try to let me know ASAP, so I can give folks who want to fill those slots a chance. Fourth, we'll be doing a HR-only league this year, for a hoot. If you want in, let me know. And finally, if you're on Facebook and I don't have you added yet, let me know! Happy New Year to all y'all, let me know what your plans are for S1, S2, and SL-HR, and we'll be getting started in a few weeks! | | Sunday, October 26th, 2008 | 1:33 am [scottcrawford]

Sanchez News
To your collective sadness, I'm not posting final results/rosters to the LJ this year for either league. Yahoo saves that stuff now, so there's no reason to kill myself over it. I might archive their archives at some point and host them locally on one of my servers, but beyond that, I'm done with typing out 375 player names. =) If you REALLY need your final roster and can't figure out how to view it on Yahoo, let me know and I'll email it to you. As for the leagues, S1 will continue as it was, more or less. Only confirmed changes for this year will be an extra DL slot (w00!), and an extra keeper over the '09-'10 winter. You've still got 4 keepers for next year, but the year after that, you'll have 5 keepers! I'm thinking about finally making draft picks correllate with your position in the standings like the bigs do, starting in '10 as well (last place-first pick and so forth), but I want opinions on that before we commit to that. Aside from that, it's pretty much set for S1. Hopefully we'll see all of you next year. S2, on the other hand, is always a different animal. We'll be killing putouts (too 1B-slanted) and pitch count (it sucked), and replacing them with Errors for the starting 9 and Losses for pitchers! That should give us some defense without any silliness, and ideally take care of our pitcher throttling problem. So, next year's S2 Categories: Offense: Runs, Home Runs, Runs Batted In, Stolen Bases, Total Bases, Average, Hitting For The Cycle, Errors Pitching: Wins, Losses, Saves, Strikeouts, Earned Run Average, Quality Starts, Grounding Into Double Plays, No-Hitters And then there's S3. "Jeez, S3?!?!", you say? Yep. Don't worry, it's easy. Home Run-only league. Details forthcoming. As for our football league, the SFL...we're having fun, looking forward to more members next season, and expanding rosters (3 RBs, 2 each of DB and DL along with team defenses) and allowing completions, receptions, and return yardage next year. Now that I've broken your brains with all that, I open the floor. =) | | Sunday, September 28th, 2008 | 6:48 pm [scottcrawford]

Congrats to our '08 Baseball winners! fpofd's team, HoJo's Heroes, has clinched a win in S1! 2 years in a row for the expansion franchise. =) Over in S2, I won, apparently. Wild and weird final, with a hurricane involved. So, uh, congrats to me, I suppose. I feel kinda like the '89 A's, though, so there may well be a rematch next season there. Great season, folks (I'll do full wrap-ups in the off-season), and now, onto football! SF is in its 2nd week, and a fun change of pace, Philip Rivers' first-half ineptitude this week notwithstanding. =) Anyone for basketball or hockey? I'm not guaranteeing I'll create the leagues or pay attention if I do, but I figured I'd ask. | | Monday, July 28th, 2008 | 7:05 am [scottcrawford]

Possible Rules Changes For '09
We've already got 2 DL slots on the board (I'm actually in one league with 3...any thoughts?), but here's the other stuff I've been thinking about: 1. Ditching our "2 trades per month" rule. It just works as a psychological deterrent in this league, which leads to fewer trades overall. It'd also bring us down to 1 custom rule (don't fuck up trades with roster overages or we kill you), which is better for everyone. 2. Any thoughts on upping the number of keepers from 4 to 5 after the '09 season (meaning we'd still have 4 going from this year to '09, but from '09-'10, we'd have 5)? I know I could use another slot this year, and I also know that the best-ranked player in baseball this year went in the first open round, so it's not totally needless. I know I could use about 7 keeper slots this year, and it'd be cool to have another slot, just so we could bring along a favorite player or a kid who's almost there, rather than being fixated on "what's best for the team". I think it'd be fun. 3. I'm also hearing that, in football, Plus leagues (at the very least) have keepers now, so in theory, if we upgraded to Plus in '09 or '10, not only would we get their little plaque or whatever they give us as a prize and "free" StatTracker, but we also wouldn't have to go nuts pre-draft day. It'd be $10 a head, which is what those of us who pay for StatTracker are paying anyway, and it'd save us a lot of hassle. If the free leagues have keepers, this one's moot, but if not, it's definitely something to think about. Let me know what you think. This is also posted on the league board, so's you have it handy. | | Wednesday, June 4th, 2008 | 4:45 pm [scottcrawford]

S2: League Full, Setting To Ready Thursday Night
With no cries of foul on the categories and all 12 teams regged (welcome Bob and, uh, Bob to the league!), we're ready to go. I'll be setting the draft to "ready" on Thursday night. So, we should have our teams on Friday. Get that pre-ranking done now, and let's get a move on! | | Monday, February 25th, 2008 | 9:06 am [scottcrawford]

OK, S1's taken care of now...
So, onto S2! We need to pick out stat categories and fill one more slot in the league. I've got one person in mind for the open slot, but if they bail, it's up for grabs. As for categories, I want to go with the default 5 (R, HR, RBI, SB, BA) and maybe 2-3 oddballs at most on offense, and Wins, Saves, Ks, ERA, GIDP (love this one!), and 2-3 oddballs on the pitching side. My oddball preferences for position players (key phrase change there) would be Total Bases, Hitting For The Cycle (to match the No-Hitter category, below) and...putouts! Yes, some defense, without opting for another percentage-based category or a negative stat like Errors. My oddball preferences for pitching would be Quality Starts (which get mentioned often here), No-Hitters, and if we're gonna go with 8 categories, how about Pitch Count for the 8th? Stock up on your Reds now! ;) Feel free to share thoughts on this, and let's see if we can get S2 squared away within the next week or so! | | Sunday, February 24th, 2008 | 1:22 pm [scottcrawford]

All S1 Keepers In! Also: S2 Stuff! Final Keeper List Here. Lots of good players in the first open round of the draft this year. It's gonna be a bloodbath. =) For those who forget how to handle keeper lists, there's an easy way and a more complex way to do it. The easy way is mandatory. The more complex way is not, but I find it helpful. Here's what you need to do for either. 1. The Easy Way: simply edit your pre-rankings (via the "Pre-Draft Rankings" tab in the "Draft Central" section of our league) so that your 4 keepers are your first 4 picks! Order's not important, but make sure you've got all 4 of your guys ranked 1-4, because, if you don't, you're gonna screw up the draft, and I'm going to have to look up the penalty for that from years past. 2. The More Complex Way: Do everything in step #1, above, then add the keepers of the other owners to your exclude list in pre-rankings. This is really a "just to be on the safe side" thing. I do it, some other owners do it, but it's not necessary as long as your first 4 ranked players are your keepers. Moving onto S2: we've yet to establish much about the league beyond membership and the fact that it's head-to-head. We haven't decided if it's default pre-rankings for players (I think we'll can that), what stat categories we're using (GIDP stays, though!), or anything like that. There are new stat categories available this year (Perfect Games and Hitting For The Cycle among them), so we'll discuss those this week. ( The 2008 available stat categories... )We do have 2 openings at present, so if anyone reading this wants in and isn't in yet, or if anyone reading this knows someone who wants to join a league, but isn't anal about needing to know every stat category used before they join, let me know (either here or via email at reverendscottcrawford@gmail.com). | | Friday, February 15th, 2008 | 5:10 pm [scottcrawford]

2008 Sanchez League Baseball Commissioners' Note!
(This will be posted on the league page, as well) Welcome to the 2008 season of Sanchez League Baseball (our 6th year!), the fantasy baseball that WILL NOT BE DENIED! Here are our league-specific rules: Sanchez League Baseball is a keeper league! This means that, if you stick around for our 2008 season, you will be able to keep up to 4 players of your choosing from your 2007 roster! All keeper picks must be submitted a week before the draft of each coming season. In 2008, this deadline is Saturday, 2/17/08 at Noon Pacific Time. We allow 1500 innings pitched instead of the usual 1250. We allow 165 games played for hitters instead of the default 162. We have 23 player slots! This enables us to have room for players like JUNG BONG. We also lower the default waiting period on players on the waiver wire from three days to one. Finally, there will be a maximum wire transaction limit of 100 wire moves per team this year. For those thinking "OH NOES", I will remind you that no one's going near 100 these days. 100's perfectly reasonable, and it cuts down on shenanigans. And now, the trade rules. This is the part of our league that scares people sometimes, but they were created to promote fairness and prepare us for any eventuality. Here's the short version, also known as "the only things you really have to worry about here": You're allowed two trades per month between March and August. Use them wisely, making reasonable, balanced deals and keep an accurate count on your players, making sure that a trade won't push your roster over the limit, and you'll never even have to think about the intricacies of my rules. If you have a problem with another trade that's pending, email me saying so (reverendscottcrawford@gmail.com), along with your reason, and if I get 4 votes against it, that trade's just about definitely toast. Please do not discuss the pros and cons of pending trades on the league board unless it's absolutely necessary. Now, the longer version: In Sanchez, we allow 2 accepted (not completed) trades allowed per team per month. That means that once both owners have accepted a trade, it counts against your total whether the deal is completed or not. The deadline for each month's trades to be accepted (not completed, accepted) is Midnight Pacific of the last day of each month. Any/all veto votes are sent via email privately to the commissioner. Please do not discuss pending trades on the league board, if at all possible. Veto votes from 1/3 of the league (5 votes, which comes out to "4 votes plus mine") gets a trade killed. I am the swing vote in all these instances, and unless I think the 4 teams voting against have no basis for it at all, I vote in favor of the veto. We've never had an instance where it's come to this with the current system (and we probably won't), and we've had one legit veto in the past (and it was in '04), so I think it'll work out again this year. Along with the one legit veto in recent history, there were two situations of note that I'll mention here. One was a situation where two teams used both of their trades for the month to make unfair trades in protest of another deal, and lost their trades for the month. Please, kids, no shenanigans this season, because if I stand my ground, I'm being a hard-ass, and if I don't, people complain that I'm playing favorites. The other situation was one that happened twice in '04. Two trades went bye-bye because one side had too many players on their roster, due to their adding a player after accepting a trade for an uneven number of players. This is a known bug in Yahoo's system. It doesn't try to block you from adding players even if they'll put you over your roster limit once the trade's finalized. You can lose a deal this way, and it inconveniences everyone when it happens, so please, keep an accurate count on your players. In any/all cases, if this happens (and please avoid it!), I will fast-track any replacement attempt at making the deal and waive the waiting period. However the team that went over their roster limit is penalized; the other owner's been through enough already, and it's not their responsibility to keep watch over the guy they're trading with. I dock the teams that go over the roster limit of one of their monthly trades. If they're out of trades for the month, they'll be docked of one of the trades for the next month, unless it's their last alloted August trade and there are no more trades "next month". If this ends up being the case, I'll force it through and not dock either owner, but the owner who had an overage on their roster will lose a week's worth of roster moves. If the deal is right at the deadline and messes up the trade for good for the other owner, then I will lock the offending owner out of roster moves for two weeks. In September, that's basically death to a team. Seriously, please, be careful and respectful of the other owners and COUNT YOUR PLAYERS, because I HATE seeing this happen! That's all for now. Enjoy, and let's have a great friggin' season! -S | 4:28 pm [scottcrawford]

Get your S1 Keepers in! scumm_boy update: we'll have final word on his picks by end of business day tomorrow. He sent in preliminaries, but is getting a second opinion. Normally, I'd crack heads over this, but we've got precedent on "Are you sure?" a year or so ago when someone, maybe fpofd almost forgot to keep Brandon Webb after he won the Cy Young, and we've got everyone else's picks in, so we'll grant an extension. No money riding on this or anything, anyhow. =) Remotely Detonated ( scumm_boy): Prince Fielder Vladimir Guerrero Curtis Granderson Troy Tulowitzki TBA ( int0lerance): Chase Utley Ryan Howard Cole Hamels Roy Oswalt 18 and Oh Shit ( ozzdotnet): Russell Martin Mark Teixeira Brandon Phillips Ichiro Suzuki Flameout at 3B ( zalriva1): Justin Verlander Grady Sizemore Chris Young (SP, SD) James Loney HoJo's Heroes ( fpofd): Jose Reyes Matt Holliday Josh Beckett Brandon Webb (Jesus, no wonder he won last year.) If we do have any problems, the hammer of fuck shall rain down upon you all. =) I'll be posting more about the league(s) here and on the league boards throughout the weekend. |
